In an official statement, Reaper Scans confirmed that the decision was made following legal action from Kakao Entertainment. In their message, the group also urged readers to support creators by reading content through official platforms such as:
- Tapas
- WEBTOON
- Manta
- Toomics
- Lezhin
- Wattpad
- Wuxiaworld
According to the group:
“Our final, heartfelt request is that you continue supporting the creators you love by reading official translations on these platforms.”
Reaper Scans had been active since 2019 and, according to Kakao Entertainment, was receiving around 10 million monthly visits. Kakao’s Global Anti-Piracy Task Force (P.CoK) stated that the site was one of the largest distributors of unauthorized Korean content, and one of the most influential piracy scan groups in the world.
P.CoK, the dedicated anti-piracy unit formed by Kakao, proudly shared the news of Reaper Scans’ closure, stating:
“P.CoK is committed to taking down illegal sites and protecting the rights of authors.”
Kakao Entertainment Increases Efforts Against Digital Piracy
The shutdown of Reaper Scans is part of a broader initiative by Kakao Entertainment to intensify its fight against piracy. In a white paper released in March 2025, the company introduced the first-ever industry-specific anti-piracy system focused on web novels and webtoons.
According to the report, between July and December 2024, Kakao blocked around 240 million piracy cases worldwide. This progress was made possible due to its status as a partner in Google’s Trusted Copyright Removal Program (TCRP), which allows for faster and more effective removal of illegal content.
