The anime adaptation of The Beginning After the End (TBATE) sparked heated debate among fans following its premiere in April. Many voiced disappointment over the animation quality and production choices.

In response to the growing backlash, series author TurtleMe published an open letter on Reddit just days before his appearance at Sakura-Con, addressing the controversy and asking fans to remain respectful.

TurtleMe began his letter by thanking readers for their continued support and acknowledged the recent turmoil surrounding the anime’s release. “It’s been… loud,” he wrote, referring to the flood of negative feedback. Still, he expressed gratitude for the passion that fans have shown since TBATE’s early days.

In the post, TurtleMe clarified that his involvement in the anime adaptation was limited, unlike his full creative control over the original novel and webcomic. “One thing I’ve learned from the anime industry is that it’s very rare for the original creator to have a say in creative decisions,” he explained. He emphasized that while he is the creator of the story, he didn’t have final control over how it was adapted to screen.

Despite the mixed reception, TurtleMe defended the production teams involved — Tapas, Crunchyroll, and Studio A-CAT — stating that each brought their own vision to the project. “There are always going to be creative differences in the room, but I truly believe everyone is doing their best,” he wrote.

Some fans have gone so far as to demand a reboot of the anime, citing their dissatisfaction. TurtleMe responded by asking for understanding and patience. “Whether it’s a pet, a story, or even a child, when something we love doesn’t meet expectations, we don’t throw it away and wish for a replacement. We support it and help it grow,” he said.

He drew comparisons to the early days of the webcomic adaptation, which initially received criticism for its lack of panels and deviation from industry norms. Over time, thanks to continued fan support, it was able to grow and evolve. This, he suggested, could also happen with the anime — but only if viewers allow it time and space to develop.

TurtleMe reminded readers that he has poured nearly a decade of his life into TBATE, writing nearly two million words. For that reason, he emphasized that every decision he makes is rooted in respect. “Respect for myself, for the time and tears I’ve put into the story, respect for the professionals working hard behind the scenes, and respect for you — my fans,” he said.

He made it clear that he wasn’t asking anyone to enjoy something they didn’t like, but rather to express their criticisms with respect. “Be the example in this vast ocean that is the internet,” he urged.

TurtleMe confirmed that he would still attend Sakura-Con despite the recent tension, stating that his love for the community and belief in the future of TBATE remains strong. “You have been the rock that gave TBATE the time and space to become what it is today. I hope I can count on that once again,” he concluded.
