Macross Dynamite 7 Faces Censorship on Streaming Services

A sad update for fans hoping to watch the anime in its entirety: Macross Dynamite 7 has been censored on Disney Plus and Hulu. Originally released as an OVA series between 1997 and 1998, Macross Dynamite 7 recently became available on streaming platforms in Japan and worldwide.

However, viewers quickly noticed that several minutes had been cut from the OVAs.

A specific scene involving Mylene Flare Jenius was removed from platforms like Disney Plus and Hulu, as well as from some streaming services in Japan. According to the Macross Dynamite 7 Wiki, Mylene is 14 years old in the series.

In the controversial scene, she is invited to dinner by a woman. During the meal, Mylene drinks juice that has been drugged, leaving her weak and vulnerable as the woman attempts to take advantage of her.

Mylene ends up undressed but is ultimately rescued. This scene remains intact on two Japanese streaming services—Amazon Prime Japan and Bandai Channel. As of now, neither Disney Plus nor Hulu has issued an official statement regarding the cuts made to the series.

It’s worth noting that in 2012, the Japanese Blu-ray release of the film The Super Dimension Fortress Macross: Do You Remember Love? was also altered, with edits made to decapitation scenes and nudity. However, subsequent Blu-ray releases restored the original content.

Most fans have expressed mixed feelings about the censorship. While many agree the scene is unnecessary, they argue that cutting it sets a dangerous precedent for streaming platforms, allowing them to censor any show at will. Others praised the censorship.
