Many people love to criticize Rent-a-Girlfriend, but it’s one of the most popular manga currently. It’s no surprise that its fourth anime season will have two cours and that the manga has continued publication for so many years. Despite this, fans frequently express frustration, claiming that the story “doesn’t progress.”

A certain post on Twitter gained significant attention when a manga reader revisited a post they made about Rent-a-Girlfriend one year ago.

Here’s what happened:

On January 30 of last year, 2024, Ash posted: “Good news, everyone. After 315 chapters of Rent-a-Girlfriend, our protagonist Kazuya finally asked Chizuru out on a date.”

He posted this with hope that their relationship would finally develop, given that Kazuya, in my opinion, is one of the most cowardly protagonists out there. He struggles to do just about anything.

Well, a year has passed, and Ash revisited his post to say:
“Screw my stupid chungus life; he asked her out a year ago, and nothing has changed.”

Comments on his tweet were flooded with memes about how “nothing happens.” I checked the latest manga chapters myself, and it seems like Kazuya is still on a date with Chizuru? It’s been a while since I last read it.

While fans are frustrated over the lack of progress in both Kazuya’s relationship and his character development, Rent-a-Girlfriend continues to dominate. Volume 39 is currently ranked number one in sales, as shown in the author’s tweet above.
