Once again, it happened on Twitter: a Japanese artist created an adorable fanart of Mitsuri from the anime Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, but their work was “mistaken” for AI-generated art. This prompted someone to claim it was AI, leading to quite the fallout.

A few days ago, an artist known only as Soyeon P shared the fanart of Mitsuri below (isn’t it cute?). However, another user, Zentrie, made annotations over the artwork, claiming it was created by AI.

Zentrie’s accusation resulted in the Japanese artist receiving numerous attacks, which ultimately led them to close their account. According to a circulating screenshot, Soyeon P mentioned they had been drawing Mitsuri for the past three years and decided to delete their account.

After the truth surfaced—that Soyeon P was not using AI—Zentrie became the target of backlash, receiving numerous comments and community notes criticizing her actions, which contributed to the artist’s account deletion.

Fuya, an artist I follow and through whom I learned about the incident, shared their opinion: “literally not a single one of these things they circled are a sign of AI I think people who has never drawn anything in their life themselves should stop roleplaying AI police they deleted the post? they should’ve deleted themselves from the internet forever. they don’t deserve an internet connection, probably felt so cool drawing circles on other people’s art and write stupid shits”

In one of Zentrie’s posts, she stated: “I falsely mistook a very real artist’s last post before they shut down their acc as AI”.  However, a community note attached to the post claimed Zentrie wasn’t genuinely remorseful and suggested she might repeat such actions in the future for “fun.”

In a long post that Zentrie made, she says that the artist in question was already going to delete his profile, that he was already about to delete all of his art and his account, and that Zentrie thought he used AI because when she discovered his account there was only 1 art by Mitsuri, to which she accused him of using AI.

But that’s her word, we don’t know if that’s really what happened.

Backlash Against Zentrie

Zentrie, who is also an artist, posted one of her artworks amidst the controversy. Ironically, her work was subjected to the same scrutiny and criticism she had directed at Soyeon P.

Attempting to mend the situation, Zentrie used a translator to write a message in Japanese, apologizing to Soyeon P for mistaking their art for AI-generated content:

Public Reactions

The situation ignited strong reactions online

  • “Just delete your account.”
  • “Quit drawing. This isn’t for you anymore. Delete your profile and find something else to do with your life.”
  • “You accused an artist of using AI, and now you’re using AI to help yourself out. Hypocrite!”
  • “It’s amazing how jealousy works. You lack talent, so you accuse someone else of using AI. By the way, delete your profile.”
  • “You really should stop tweeting.”
  • “I can’t believe you’re still here. Just delete your account.”

In my humble opinion, Zentrie is now using the situation to gain engagement for her own account, as she is also an artist. I’m unsure if her apologies are sincere—likely not—but once again, this incident highlights the dangers of accusing others of using AI without solid evidence.
