They Accuse Wit of Making Ussop Whiter in the One Piece Remake

New information about the anime “The One Piece” was revealed on August 10th. This is a remake of the beginning of the anime made by Wit Studio and we had the revelation of the character designs.

However, what was supposed to be something to celebrate, since One Piece will get a remake of the beginning of its story, something that can bring more fans, turned into a fight on Twitter because of Ussop’s “lighter” skin.

We have people on the internet obsessed with Ussop’s lighter skin tone in the remake and asking for him to have darker skin. So let’s start by looking at an image of Ussop in the original anime:

And now see its design in the remake made by Wit Studio:

The design above shows very light colors, not only on the skin but also on the clothes. We don’t know yet if the anime will be like this or if this is really just concept art, but some are already accusing Wit Studio of having “whitened” Ussop.

Let’s see some comments.

“All the others look so good because they screwed up Ussop’s skin tone”

“White Ussop? Oh they messed up so bad”

“Why is he white?”

“He’s whiter than Nami, what the hell”

“Why does Nami have more color than him?”

“Why did they whiten an already white character?”

“Why Ussop is white, I had hopes”

You can find many comments from people complaining about Ussop being white in this Twitter post (of course). On the other hand, there are also many fans who simply don’t see a problem with his skin and say that it is more faithful to what Oda draws.

Fan Claims That Toei Darkened Characters’ Skin

For example, on the cover of volume 5, where all the characters, like Ussop, appear with white skin, I saw some comments from people saying that it was the anime that darkened his skin for no reason.

One Piece manga

Giving my opinion here, I never expect consistency in character colors as well as sizes (size of anything). I’ll give an example like Emilia’s breasts in ReZero, which in one episode appear one size and a few episodes later in the same season it’s as if they almost don’t exist.

Every time the person doing the illustration will end up changing the size of things and the color. The fan below explained that it was the old Toei anime that darkened the skin of characters, differentiating itself from the manga drawn by Oda:

Japanese React to Controversy: “The Japanese really don’t care about skin color, do they?”

But then this topic reached the ears of the Japanese! They saw the fight going on and decided to comment on it, so let’s see how the Japanese reacted?

“First of all, Usopp’s parents aren’t black, right? The chance of him being black is zero.”

“Wouldn’t he be from Germany or something?”

“That’s right, Usopp isn’t that white.”

“He would be from Morocco or Spain, something like that.”

“That way of drawing the lips never caused controversy because he was white, right?”

“That’s just how it is.”

“Putting skin tone is hard work, so he’s basically white.”

“Oh, if you irritate the outside world, it’s all over.”

“I imagined Usopp with darker skin.”

“The Japanese really don’t care about skin color, do they?”

“In the live-action version, he’s black, but it was a good casting choice.”

“Was it a problem that Oda said Usopp is of African origin?”

“We can say he’s light-skinned, right? I think he’s from North Africa.”

“Usopp has curly hair, so him being white seems weird.”

“I thought he was a mix of Native American and white.”

“That’s right. Usopp isn’t black, is he?”

“It’s true to the original, right?”

“It seems like they’re confusing Sogeking’s mask with his skin color.”
