Kantai Collection Illustrator Receives Death Threats Over Lexington Design
Kantai Collection is a popular game that turns warships into cute girls, known as “ship girls,” that you collect and send into naval battles. Despite its popularity, the game has faced strong competition in recent years, especially from Azur Lane.
One of the major differences between Kantai Collection and Azur Lane is the character design. Both games are based on the same real warships, but Azur Lane’s designs tend to be more modern compared to those in Kantai Collection.
For example, compare the design of Souryuu in Kantai Collection with that of Souryuu in Azur Lane. This aesthetic difference has led some fans to criticize Kantai Collection’s artistic style:

Kantai Collection Illustrator Receives Death Threats Over USS Lexington Design
Recently, illustrator Kia Asamiya was hired to create a new “ship girl” for Kantai Collection, the USS Lexington. The design, which evokes the style of the 80s and 90s, has sparked controversy among fans.
Some appreciated the nostalgic style, while others criticized it, arguing that the design doesn’t fit with the rest of the class or pointing out “errors” related to the original ship.
Unfortunately, the controversy escalated beyond normal criticism. Kia Asamiya began receiving death threats due to the USS Lexington’s design. In response, Kantai Collection announced that it would take legal action against those who made the threats.
Currently, Kia Asamiya’s Twitter profile is locked, and he decided not to attend Comiket due to the threats. He has already notified the police about the situation.
Many fans have defended the illustrator, saying he did a great job and that the extreme reactions are unjustified. One user commented, “Kantai Collection players are complicated,” while another said, “I hate her design, but that’s no reason to threaten the illustrator.”
