Fans Criticize the Ranma Remake
The Ranma remake is currently airing, and with each episode, fans are increasingly comparing the new anime to the original from 1989, whether it’s about certain lines being removed, the clothing, or the level of fanservice.
However, today’s topic isn’t about any of that, but rather an action scene. In episode 6 of Ranma, Akane ends up accepting a request from her classmates to enter a martial arts competition involving gymnastics.
She then trains with Ranma, and fans have created a video that places the same scene from the old anime and the remake side by side. So watch and draw your own conclusions first:

Fans Criticize the Ranma Remake
It seems that people are getting more and more frustrated when comparing the two versions. The current complaint is about the scene you just watched, with the argument being that the original 1989 anime animated this sequence much better than the remake.
The original anime appears to have more camera and character movement compared to the remake, and the choreography is also better. But let’s read some opinions:
“The old version truly has real acting.”
“Honestly, the animation in the old version is better; it’s hilarious.”
“The passion of the animators is gone; today it’s just a job.”
“More than the animation quality itself, isn’t the storyboard poorly done? It’s MAPPA Studio that’s producing it, right? Why does it feel so much like a slideshow?”
“There’s a strong sense of sloppy work. At least the animation isn’t completely ruined.”
“You can feel that the remake avoids changing angles frequently out of laziness. Or maybe the production team from the old version was excessively workaholic.”
“The difference in animation direction is glaring. Today’s anime feels like “just something moving.” Very boring.”
“They abandoned cel animation and analog techniques and started to rely too much on CG and digital… As Miyazaki feared, the quality has completely deteriorated”
“I sense a difference in skills that spans generations.”
As some have mentioned, is this a generational issue? Did older animators have more skills and creativity to animate these scenes compared to the current animators? These were the opinions of Japanese fans.
Looking at the Western side, many people praised the visuals of the remake but admitted that this scene in the original anime is indeed better. One person even commented, “I thought the purpose of a remake was to make it better than the original, not worse.”
