How Studio Doga Kobo shows affection for Oshi no Ko

In the very first episode, we can see how director Daisuke Hiramaki intensifies the scenario to portray Ai’s return to the stage after giving birth to twins.

Its framing looks better here, giving a physical edge to the distance between the artists and the industry and highlighting the difference between that cold reality and the polished product that is presented to people.

When it comes to this episode itself, the biggest change is in the director’s chair. After a first half of mostly storyboarding by Hiramaki, assistant series director Chao Nekotomi takes on the role of storyboarder for the entire second half of the episode.

Nekotami’s storyboards quickly capture Ai’s manipulative relationship with the camera, but it’s her use of color that stands out right off the bat.

One of his main roles in this anime adaptation is to provide color scripts, something akin to a color storyboard or concept boards as guidelines for the entire team, setting the intended mood of each scene through the colors themselves.

As anime moves towards digital effects playing a bigger role in its aesthetic, roles like this become more prevalent.

Since Nekotomi takes over as storyboarder and unit director as well, she is able to deftly contrast the cooler backstage colors with an artificially bright location.

When Ai is stabbed by a mad fan, this entire segment is as breathtaking as it is revolting, contrasting beauty and gruesome detail in many ways.

Nekotomi’s palette dyed red with Ai’s blood and the other expressions detailed by Kappe, the chief animation director, becoming increasingly distorted by pain.

This painful moment is perfectly illustrated by the Doga Kobo studio, as the studio is also rich in skilled animators. As Ai’s life fades away, she realizes that her love was real, something that was clearer to the audience than it was to herself.

In another stunning sequence that elevates the source material, the simple look of the stars’ dark eyes represents Aqua’s thirst for revenge after realizing the stalker must have someone tipping off Ai.

We can consider this first episode an excellent adaptation of the original material. We cannot deny that Oshi no Ko is the anime of the moment that many people are looking forward to for the next episodes.
