In the past, it was common in official translations of manga, games, and even anime for companies to modify the names and sometimes the appearances of characters to change the setting from Japan to the United States.

However, over the years, this type of practice has become less and less common. Many games, anime, and manga now receive official translations, and the original names are preserved.

There is a manhwa called An Outsider’s Way In, and its official translation decided to do something that I hadn’t seen in a long time. First and foremost, check out the main characters and their original names:

The blonde girl is named Yun-A Jang, the protagonist is Gyeon-U Song, the other long-haired girl is named Si-A I, and the short-haired one is Ha-Rin.

However, what happens? Official Translation Changes Character Names! The Toomics website changed the characters’ names! For American names, Yun-A Jang became Kira, Gyeon-U Song turned into Kaleb, and Si-A I became Sylvia.

And apparently, this is a common practice at Toomics. In another title called Springtime For Blossom, which was also released by Toomics, they not only changed the names of the characters to American names but also altered the hair color of the main heroine to blonde:

Reading people’s comments, I found out that this is a quite common practice in relation to manhwas, with companies changing Korean names to American names and sometimes even altering the characters.
