Anime Industry Achieves Record 14.3% Growth in 2023
The anime industry marked a record-breaking year in 2023, with a 14.3% growth compared to 2022, according to the Japanese Animation Association’s (AJA) latest report.
Released on December 22, 2024, the report highlights that the total anime market value, encompassing merchandise, music, and other areas, reached 3.3465 trillion yen (approximately US$ 21.27 billion).

This surpasses the previous record of 2.9277 trillion yen (around US$ 18.61 billion) set in 2022, marking the highest growth rate since AJA began tracking the industry in 2002.

International Market Growth
For the second consecutive year, the international anime market outpaced Japan’s domestic market, accounting for 51.5% of the total industry value. The global market grew to 1.7222 trillion yen (US$ 10.94 billion), an 18.02% increase from 2022.
A supplemental report by Parrot Analytics showed that North America and Asia together contributed 72% of anime’s global revenue, generating US$ 14.3 billion.

Domestic Market and Production Growth
Japan’s domestic anime market reached 1.6243 trillion yen (US$ 10.32 billion), reflecting a 10.6% increase from 2022. Meanwhile, anime production value, focused solely on manufacturing and financing, rose to 427.2 billion yen (US$ 2.71 billion), up by 25.4%.
Streaming and Merchandise Lead
The streaming sector experienced a 51.4% increase, totaling 250.1 billion yen (US$ 1.58 billion). Merchandise sales grew by 4.7%, reaching 700.8 billion yen (US$ 4.45 billion). Combined merchandise sales worldwide hit US$ 14.3 billion, with Asia and North America being the largest contributors.
Top Streaming Platforms
Netflix led the streaming revenue in 2023, generating US$ 2.0739 billion, followed by Crunchyroll with US$ 1.161 billion. Other major players included Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, and Disney+
