At the end of December, a tweet went viral showing a street interview by a Japanese variety show. The interview featured a Vtuber fan holding merchandise of Towa, a Vtuber affiliated with Hololive.

From the screenshots, you can piece together the context of the conversation. The fan states that he loves Vtubers. The interviewer then comments on how it’s impossible to know the real face behind a Vtuber. To this, the fan replies that it doesn’t matter to him—even if it’s an old man behind the avatar, he will still support his favorite Vtuber!

Looking at some reactions on Twitter, many people shared similar thoughts, emphasizing that personality is what truly matters and that a Vtuber’s personal life shouldn’t be important.

Another user expressed irritation at the TV program for trying to force the question, saying,
“I’m not into Vtubers, but that aside, it annoys me to see something like this. I don’t go asking Disney employees about who’s behind the Mickey costume.”

Another user applied the same logic to games and anime:
“When I play a game, I don’t think about the faces of the designers and producers. It’s the same when I watch an anime—I’m not wondering about the faces of the voice actors.”
