Keiji Inafune Requested Roll Panty Shots in Marvel vs. Capcom

Keiji Inafune Requested Roll's Panty Shots in Marvel vs. Capcom

In September, a collection titled Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics was released for multiple consoles and PC, bringing together several games from the Marvel vs. Capcom series.

One of the characters featured in this collection is Roll, the little robot girl from the Mega Man series. During her fights in the game, her underwear is frequently visible, and the reason for this traces back to Keiji Inafune.

In a post on X, attributed to Atsushi Tomita, a planner for Marvel vs. Capcom, it was suggested that Keiji Inafune had specifically asked for Roll pantys to be visible during her moves. Tomita wrote:

Roll Marvel vs Capcom

“Since Roll was a character from another department (within Capcom), when we first added her to Marvel vs. Capcom, we were careful to ensure her panties weren’t visible.

However, when Mr. Inafune, the head of the Mega Man department, reviewed our work, he asked, ‘No panty shots?’ As a result, INO, the artist in charge of the character, ended up reworking the pixel art so her panties would show with each movement.”

Keiji Inafune, known as the creator of characters in the Mega Man series, also served as a producer for later entries before leaving Capcom in 2010. During the development of the first Marvel vs. Capcom, Inafune was regarded as the key decision-maker for all things related to the Mega Man universe.

This revelation has sparked controversy on forums like ResetEra, particularly due to Roll’s age. According to the manual for Mega Man Legends (1997), Roll is described as “Mega Man’s 14-year-old best friend.” In Marvel vs. Capcom: Clash of Super Heroes (1998) and Marvel vs. Capcom 2: New Age of Heroes (2000), both re-released in the collection, Roll is depicted as a young girl, which, unsurprisingly, led to heated debates online.
