Kaiji Mobile Game Abandons Manga Style and Makes the Girls Cute
When someone asks if cute waifus are really necessary to help an anime, manga, or game stand a chance of success, show them this case. Kaiji is a popular manga series with several anime adaptations.
I’ve never read Kaiji, but from the summaries, it seems to involve games and gambling, which lends itself well to mobile game ideas. The series has had a few games, and the latest one I found is called Kaiji Gekiatsu no Machi, which is the topic of this post.
Kaiji Mobile Game Abandons Manga Style and Makes the Girls Cute
When I think of Kaiji, I immediately picture characters with a “rough” art style and strange expressions. Kaiji’s style isn’t the most refined in the manga world, but it doesn’t get in the way.
For example, here’s what the character designs look like:
And I think it’s clear, but yes—the female characters in this game don’t follow Kaiji’s original style at all and are extremely cute!
It almost looks like another anime! Below is a video where a fan goes through the characters; just notice the difference in design between male and female characters:
How did the Japanese fans react?
- “Did they decide that the original female characters don’t make money? hahaha”
- “It looks so much like a crossover that you’d think it’s a collaboration. haha”
- “If the girls aren’t cute, it doesn’t sell. What can you do…”
- “Honestly, the design for male and female characters is on a different level, but I feel like even the male characters in Kaiji lost their original flavor…”
- “If that’s the case, just look at Fate/Grand Order, where every character has a different illustrator—it gets pretty wild.”
- “What did they do to the female characters? haha”
- “I can feel a tiny bit of Kaiji’s design here, but this character’s face would never appear in the original.”
- “This shows a total lack of respect for the original author…”
So, what do you think of this super-cute approach to the female characters versus the males?
