Do you use any cloud file hosting services, such as Google Drive, for instance? It’s a good file hosting service, as you end up with around 15GB of files in your free plan.

However, it turns out that for certain types of files, using these services is extremely complicated. Some Japanese users took to Twitter to express their disappointments after discovering that Google Drive is banning accounts because of doujins NSFW.

According to a now-deleted tweet, a Japanese user mentioned that his Drive account was banned for “containing content of abuse or sexual exploitation of a minor.”

This Japanese user explained that his Drive account had various adult contents, including NSFW content of adult men and women, not limited to doujins and illustrations. Another Japanese user said that caution should be taken with Drive and other services like OneDrive, as they ban such types of content.

In a now-deleted tweet (as you can see above), this Japanese user explained how each cloud file hosting service works concerning NSFW content.

  • Google Drive: Do not use
  • Dropbox: A sense of security from an established company – NSFW is OK
  • MEGA: Despite an uncertain future, it is one of the leaders – NSFW is OK
  • pCloud: Expensive, but you can buy lifetime space – Probably not good for NSFW
  • BOX: Expensive, also not good for NSFW

And in the end, he gives a tip on how to store adult files in services: “Don’t forget to carefully archive your ‘suspicious files’ in a double-zipped folder and add passwords.”

Seeing this situation, the Japanese made the following comments:

“The day when physical backups disappear will never come.”

“If there is greater understanding about this, there may be opportunities for national companies in the consumer cloud services market. However, as many consumers are not aware of this, it may not be so significant.”

“In the past, when I took films to be developed at a photo store, they refused to print nude photos. It seems like we’re going back to those times.”

“There was a time when I was considering using Microsoft’s OneDrive for free storage, but I gave up because I thought there might be issues with fanarts. It seems I was right to give up.”

“I can’t put my fanarts on Google Drive.”

“I always wonder if the privacy of communications is being protected. Isn’t this censorship?”

“When I put my photos on Google Photos, they backed up private files without my permission, and as a result, all my accounts, images, services, and subscriptions were frozen and deactivated.”

“The fact that cloud providers can access stored data is a known disadvantage of the cloud, so I think it’s better to also have a physical copy of important data.”

“There is always the risk that cloud data will be forcibly deleted, so it’s good to have the habit of local backup and, if possible, print the data. Companies like Google and Apple are not trustworthy.”

“External services can disappear suddenly, and even your accounts can be deleted. So, I still buy CDs and physical books.”

“I heard there is a possibility that this could happen if you have photos of children’s bath scenes stored on Google Drive. Am I safe too? I have some photos from childhood and when I was a baby, including some in swimwear and in the bath.”

“This is really serious and requires attention because there is a possibility that, if you slip up, you may not be able to use Google’s services in the future. It’s really dangerous not to be able to use Google services in the Reiwa era, so it’s really important to be careful.”
