The Ranma Remake Cut Female-Related Dialogue from the Manga
As of this post, 5 episodes of the Ranma remake have aired, and from what we’ve seen, it follows Rumiko Takahashi’s manga more faithfully than the original 1989 anime.
For instance, in the remake, Episode 5 reaches the part where Ryoga reveals why he seeks revenge against Ranma, while in the original anime, this occurred in Episode 10—showing just how much filler the original anime added (since the manga was still being published at the time).
However, despite cutting out fillers and being more faithful overall, the remake censors and removes certain lines, likely seen as “problematic” for 2024.
The Ranma Remake Cut Female-Related Dialogue from the Manga
For this post, I’ll describe events from Episodes 4 and 5 of Ranma. In Episode 4, Ranma and Ryoga are fighting, and one of Ryoga’s headbands cuts Akane’s hair, which is very long at that point.
Akane freezes, and Ranma says she’s in shock. Then, two girls shout, “Of course!” and another says, “How awful,” with the last one adding, “You’re the worst.”
However, when you compare this to the manga, you’ll notice only the first girl kept her original line. In the anime, they say, “How awful” and “You’re the worst,” but in the manga, they say:
“Hair is very important to a girl” and “You should know that. What kind of girl are you?”
The original anime keeps the manga’s dialogues.
And this wasn’t the only scene where this kind of dialogue was cut. Now, here’s the worst case: in another scene, Akane remembers when she decided to grow out her hair, as she always wore it short.
She’s in love with Dr. Tofu, who loves Kasumi, and Kasumi is very feminine—long hair, soft-spoken, and so on. In the flashback, when Kasumi arrives with Dr. Tofu, she says this:
And then young Akane looks at Kasumi and thinks this:
And that’s all we get in the remake, which cut out lines from Kasumi present in the manga and original anime.
In both the manga and the original anime, in this scene, Kasumi says this and more to Akane:
“If you don’t start acting more like a girl, Dr. Tofu won’t like you.”
This line from Kasumi was the trigger for Akane to try acting more like a girl, which makes the later scene of her crying with Dr. Tofu more impactful, as it’s her giving up on her first love.
Why do you think the remake cut these “feminine” lines?
