Monument Honoring Kyoto Animation Arson Attack Victims Unveiled

It has been 5 years since the devastating arson attack on the renowned Kyoto Animation studio. This shocking event, which resonated worldwide, left a deep scar on the hearts of the victims’ families who tragically did not survive.

The crime claimed the lives of 36 people who worked at the studio, leaving a heavy burden on the hearts of their families and anime fans around the globe.

Monument Honoring Kyoto Animation Arson Attack Victims Unveiled

As a tribute to the victims of the fire, a monuments has been erected to honor the memory of those who sadly lost their lives.

Located in Uji, within Kyoto Prefecture—the same area where Kyoto Animation is based—the monument stands nearly 10 feet tall and was designed with contributions from Kyoto Animation artists. It features 36 white birds spiraling towards the sky, symbolizing the victims of the crime.

The dedication ceremony on July 14 was attended by 93 people, many of whom were family members of the victims. The monument bears inscriptions such as “Passing dreams and passion from one person to another” and “Unlimited dreams, told through animation, in each drawn line, years of cultivated talent and deep feeling. From here in Uji, Kyoto, they mirrored across the world, taking flight towards our uninterrupted future.”

Although the original studio site was demolished, the monument is located within the Tea and Uji History Park, adjacent to Uji Station. Kyoto Animation has requested that visitors refrain from leaving flowers or other offerings, likely to preserve the park’s atmosphere.
