Yuri Kiss in Precure Sparks Complaints

Yuri Kiss in Precure Sparks Complaints

The anime Mahoutsukai Precure!! Mirai Days, the second season of Mahoutsukai Precure!! originally broadcast in 2015, has recently premiered, and its first episode is already causing controversy due to a Yuri kiss between the series’ two protagonists.

In the first episode of Mahoutsukai Precure!! Mirai Days, characters Mirai Asahina and Riko Izayoi share a kiss, as seen in the scenes below:

As someone who doesn’t watch Precure, I’m not familiar with the context of the kiss between the two characters. I imagine they are portrayed as a couple. I’ve also come across comments from fans hoping that this time Mahoutsukai Precure Mirai Days will conclude with a Yuri ending, suggesting that the first season didn’t have one.

However, this kiss in the debut episode of Mahoutsukai Precure!! Mirai Days has sparked various complaints online. This is primarily because Precure is traditionally a children’s anime, although this second season is not aimed at kids.

The first season of Mahoutsukai Precure aired on Sunday mornings, but this second season, Mahoutsukai Precure Mirai Days, is a late-night anime, targeting an older, more otaku-centric audience.

Even so, the criticism hasn’t subsided.

Yuri Kiss in Precure Sparks Complaints

  • “I like Yuri, but seeing this in a show I loved as a child is irritating. Precure has always been about friendship, effort, and victory.”
  • “I’d love to see an official Yuri kiss between two girls, but I hate it when it feels like it’s just pandering to otakus.”
  • Precure seems to always attract otakus who make comments like, ‘This is what you guys like, huh?’ It’s unnecessary.”
  • “Sorry, but Yuri isn’t bad. I just don’t want it to turn into this. Don’t turn pure friendships into romance. It feels like it’s all done to please otakus.”
  • “I don’t hate Yuri, but I feel uncomfortable with the idea of selling this as Yuri in Precure. It feels like the focus is on pandering to a niche audience, and that bothers me.”
  • “Has Precure ever had an unpopular season? Maybe they’re trying to promote something different because they feel it’s not gaining enough attention.”
  • “In the past, even when Yuri was implied, it was more subtle. Now it feels explicit. It doesn’t fit a children’s audience. It seems tailored for otakus.”
  • “It’s a kids’ anime, but now it feels like it’s aimed at a specific niche audience. Sad.”
  • “This is for kids, so this doesn’t make sense. Precure is about friendship, not romance.”
  • “Was this made official? It feels weird. It’s just a kids’ show.”
  • “Using a Yuri theme in something so beloved feels off. It seems like it’s targeting the wrong audience.”
  • Precure isn’t about romance, so this doesn’t align.”
  • “If they focus on big friendships turning into romance, maybe the franchise won’t last much longer.”
  • “Why do they need to make this so deep? Precure shouldn’t be like this. Save this for other projects.”
  • “This feels like it’s made to please Yuri otakus, but it bothers those who grew up watching it. I don’t like it.”
  • “Even I think this is gross.”
  • “The ‘Precure uncles’ must be thrilled, but how do kids who watched it back then feel?”
  • “Friendship between girls is great, but romance isn’t necessary.”
  • “This kind of thing never faces political correctness debates, huh?”
  • “Why complain about an anime made for adults? It’s like complaining about the smell when you walk into a sewer.”
  • “They’ve stopped hiding that it’s aimed at creepy otakus.”
  • “It’s not strange, given it airs late at night, and otakus are the ones buying the merchandise. Of course, the creators will cater to them.”
  • “I can’t tell anymore if the viewers or the creators are the more depraved ones.”
  • “If Kirimaru and Doi Sensei have done more outrageous things, why is this even an issue?”
  • “They’ve transformed holding hands dozens of times. A kiss in the sequel is no big deal.

Even in the manga adaptation, the two characters kiss.
