School in Japan introduces gender-neutral uniform

A school in Japan is offering a uniform option for students who don’t want to wear a skirt or pants. It’s a “gender neutral” uniform option that the school is making available, the culotte.

The school in question, Yamazaki High School, is focusing on “gender diversity”, allowing students to wear skirts or pants regardless of gender. The school also allows boys and girls to choose ties or ribbons.

The school held a poll for students to give their opinion on the new uniform option, where 70% agreed with the new option, which you can see below:

Although the new garment looks like a skirt, it has the same structure as short pants and is easy to move around in. One student who was interviewed said that the uniform is easier to move around in and that way she can show her individuality more easily by having choices.”

The school’s decision came under some criticism online, where some people commented that it could destroy the school uniform culture that Japan is known for, for having cute uniforms. It is also normal for some students to choose the school they want to study because of their uniform.
