If you missed the last beef in the anime world, Bridget came out as a DLC character for the game Guilty Gear Strive a while ago and has a dialogue in one of the story modes of the character that Bridget says is a girl.

For those who don’t play the games in the series (like me) and don’t understand anything about the story (like me), Bridget has a twin brother, it’s said that the place where Bridget and the brother were born, they see twins as a bad thing, so it’s custom “get rid” of one of the twins.

Bridget’s parents didn’t want to get rid of their child so they raised him as a her, to protect Bridget. So Bridget is a boy who has always dressed like a girl in the story of Guilty Gear, to protect herself. And Japanese audiences really like that kind of character.

Guilty Gear Strive Made Bridget Identify As A Girl

The whole controversy started when in the latest game of the franchise, in one of Bridget’s endings, the then boy says that he is now a girl, this raised several fights on Twitter, including a good part of the Japanese public did not like it, because in Japan Bridget is seen as “otoko no ko”, which is a boy who is a boy but dresses as a woman.

You can see the video:

Obviously a lot of people also celebrated that this was put in the game and now whoever treats Bridget like a boy ends up getting complaints on the internet, and that’s what happened with a Japanese illustrator.

Some claim that this decision was made by the western localization of the game.

An illustrator named Piriko made an innocent illustration of Bridget that you can see below, and in the caption he put “Otokonoko”. Turns out he posted his illustration on Twitter, and people came wanting to correct him. The artist probably didn’t like all the discussion that took place and deleted his account (or he was reported and Twitter deleted it).

The illustration: which was also deleted from the illustrator’s Pixiv profile.

Below you can see some prints, only the first one I took, the other prints came from other profiles on Twitter.

We don’t know the exact length of the discussion because the illustrator in question ended up deleting his profile later, one thing I noticed after all this discussion started, is that for a good part of the Japanese audience, Bridget is a boy and that won’t change for they.

Anyway, this is a bullshit that I think will always happen when a Japanese illustrator decides to draw Briget and decides to treat it like a boy.
